The .38 Special cartridge was released as a black powder spherical, but designed the bounce to smokeless loadings. Although the transition from black powder to smokeless took only a handful of many years in armed forces circles, black powder in no way entirely disappeared and rounds continued to become launched as black powder or hybrid cartridges.
